What is Artex?

Artex is a decorative textured coating that can be found in many homes built from the 1960s onwards, usually on ceilings and occasionally on walls. It comes in a variety of patterns and finishes, including swirls, stipples, broken leather, broken leather with swirl and basket weave.

The texture coats were originally made with asbestos, which can be dangerous if disturbed. Many homes built during this time still contain Artex ceilings and walls, and there have been many concerns raised about its safety. If your home or business premises has it applied to the surfaces of walls or ceilings you may need to remove it. Some people find that it makes their home feel dated or they simply do not like the look of it. With modern designs often favouring smooth finish with minimal decoration, Artex can be seen as something of an eyesore.

Why Cover Artex?

In the 1970s and 1980s, Artex was a very popular decorative finish for new ceilings and walls. It was mainly used to hide uneven surfaces and imperfections in plasterwork, but its brushed effect also created a contemporary textured look.

There were many different patterns available, most of which involved simple swirls or more elaborate stipple effects. These were often combined with different colours such as gold, silver or bronze to create glistening metallic highlights.

Artex has now fallen out of fashion and people who own homes with this type of ceiling often wish to remove it altogether. Unfortunately, the only way to do this is to either scrape or chip it off your ceiling using specialist tools. This is time consuming and makes a lot of mess. And when you consider that it needs to be replaced by new ceilings or plastering work, it’s also expensive.

The good news is that Artex can be covered up relatively easily using paints and surface treatments that have been specially developed for this purpose.

Our Artex Covering Services

We can cover your artex ceiling, removing the need for expensive repairs, and provide a smooth finish ready for you to decorate.
Once you have decided to remove your artex , we will prepare the room for work by protecting your furniture and furnishings, and covering the floor with dust sheets.
Our 3-step process is simple:

  1. Remove any existing fixtures from the ceiling.
  2. Scrape off the artex using our specially designed scraper, leaving a slightly textured surface.
  3. We apply two coats and finish off with plaster boarding over the existing artex. We then skim coat with two thin coats of finishing plaster. This provides a level surface that can be painted or wallpapered as required.

We have been covering Artex ceilings and plaster boarding since YEARXX. We always provide quality service at the right price.

Why Choose Brighton Plastering Services?

There are a number of benefits which come with choosing us to carry out your artex removal.

Firstly, it is cheaper than you may think. We are able to offer competitive rates as we understand that this is something that people do not need to have done every day and there is not always a great deal of spare cash around.

Secondly, the process itself is much easier than carrying out repairs on an artex ceiling yourself. Whilst it is possible for you to buy the products and try this by yourself, there is so much to take into consideration, such as the type of surface you are working on and how much of it needs doing. As professional damp proofing experts we can help with every aspect of your ceilings and walls, including taking care of any mould or rising damp that may be present.

Thirdly, we make sure that everything is ready for you to redecorate when we have finished the job. Our team will carefully prepare all surfaces so that they are smooth and ready for painting or papering – saving you time and money in the long run!
